About the Journal
Journal of Qur’anic Legal Studies and Exegesis (JQLSE) is an international peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to advancing critical and interdisciplinary scholarship in the fields of Qur’anic legal interpretation, Islamic legal thought, and Qur’anic exegesis. The journal provides a scholarly platform for the publication of original research that examines the relationship between the Qur’an, legal theory, legal hermeneutics, and contemporary socio-legal issues from both classical and modern perspectives. The journal particularly emphasizes the study of āyāt al-aḥkām (Qur’anic legal verses), tafsīr studies, uṣūl al-fiqh, maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, legal hermeneutics, comparative legal interpretation, manuscript studies, and interdisciplinary approaches to Qur’anic law. JQLSE encourages innovative research that integrates traditional Islamic scholarship with contemporary academic methodologies and engages critically with global scholarly debates.

JQLSE welcomes contributions from scholars, researchers, academics, and practitioners from around the world whose works demonstrate analytical rigor, methodological clarity, theoretical contribution, and relevance to contemporary discussions in Islamic studies and legal interpretation. The journal aims to contribute significantly to the development of international scholarship in Qur’anic legal studies by promoting academically grounded, globally relevant, and intellectually transformative research. All submitted manuscripts undergo a rigorous double-blind peer review process to ensure academic quality, originality, and scholarly integrity. The journal is committed to international standards of publication ethics and follows the principles and best practices established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). The Journal of Qur’anic Legal Studies and Exegesis is published biannually in English by Bahtera Al Fikr Press Part of Institut Bahtera Studi Islam, Indonesia, and adopts an open-access publishing model to support the global dissemination of knowledge, scholarly collaboration, and academic exchange.

The Journal of Qur’anic Legal Studies and Exegesis, Vol. 1 No. 1 (2026), with e-ISSN xxxx-xxxx and p-ISSN xxxx-xxxx, presents a collection of scholarly articles focusing on Qur’anic legal studies, Islamic legal exegesis, legal hermeneutics, and the development of Islamic legal thought in both classical and contemporary contexts. This issue discusses several important themes, including interpretive authority in gender-related discourse, maqāṣid-based approaches to āyāt al-aḥkām, the epistemology of Qur’anic legal interpretation, Islamic legal ethics concerning ribā and Islamic finance, and the contribution of al-Jaṣṣāṣ in positioning the Qur’an as a foundational source of legal argumentation. This issue features academic contributions from various higher education institutions across different countries, including International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Malaysia; Universitas Islam Negeri Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau, Indonesia; Institut Ilmu Al-Qur’an (IIQ) Jakarta, Indonesia; Al-Azhar University, Egypt; Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Indonesia; Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Indonesia; Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara, Indonesia; Universitas PTIQ Jakarta, Indonesia; and Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara, Indonesia. The participation of authors from three countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, and Egypt, reflects the international academic scope of this issue in advancing Qur’anic legal studies and Islamic legal scholarship. Through the articles presented in this issue, the journal seeks to strengthen scholarly discourse on the relationship between Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic legal reasoning, and contemporary socio-legal challenges. This issue also demonstrates that Qur’anic legal studies are not only significant for understanding classical Islamic intellectual traditions, but also remain highly relevant for addressing legal, ethical, and social issues in the modern world.
